Introducing: Jessica

Hello there! My name is Jessica Walker and I am one of two Co-Owners of Ruby Clay Company. I am a native Tulsan and I graduated from the University of Tulsa in 2017 with my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography. I spent a great deal of credit hours working in ceramics as well, and after graduation I looked forward to working with clay more. I am a resident artist at Red Heat Ceramics in Tulsa’s Pearl District and I was one of the first people to join the studio. I spent seven years working for art non-profits before starting Ruby Clay Company with my friend Maddie Schmidt.

My focus in ceramics is handbuilding, pretty much exclusively dealing in the human figure. I’m a big sci-fi, fantasy, and history fan, and those themes tend to seep into my work. I am interested in creating larger figural groups. Ceramic artists who build larger pieces, depending on how complicated the piece is, build them in such a way that they can be taken apart and resembled. That way they can be fired and moved much more easily. Recently, I have been building smaller pieces that can be taken apart and resembled, so I can wrap my head around the mechanics when it is time to build larger pieces. I’ve been pretty obsessed with art and making things since I was a kid. Outside of my art degree, I’ve taught myself how to knit, crochet, and sew. Most of the clothes in my wardrobe are pieces I’ve made. In addition to making things, I am obsessed with my four cats (FOUR!) all of which I rescued from the streets. They are very cute, and they love to involve themselves in all of my projects.
