Introducing our Joan Wright candle, a tribute to the remarkable woman who endured the earliest recorded witchcraft accusation in any British North American colony. Immerse yourself in the captivating blend of baked apple, cinnamon, butter, and brown sugar, as you delve into Joan's extraordinary story of resilience.

Joan Wright, born around 1596 in Hull, Yorkshire, England, travelled with her husband Robert Wright to the Colony of Virginia. Settling in Jamestown and later becoming known as "Goodwife Wright," Joan was recognized as a self-professed healer. However, her left-handedness, deemed suspicious by the standards of the time, made her the target of mistrust and suspicion.

The accusations against Joan began when the Allington family refused her services as a midwife due to her left-handedness. Tragically, shortly after the baby's birth, the infant passed away, and blame swiftly fell upon Joan. On September 11, 1626, she was summoned before the General Court of Virginia in Jamestown, where Sir George Yeardley, the Colonial Governor, presided over her witchcraft trial.

During the inquiry, Joan's accusers presented a litany of alleged acts: cursing local livestock and crops, controlling the weather, bewitching butter churns, accurately predicting the deaths of neighbors, and casting a spell that caused the death of the newborn baby. Remarkably, Joan did not contest the charges of witchcraft and, at times, subtly encouraged this belief.

Illuminate your surroundings with the Joan Wright Candle and be transported to a time when accusations of witchcraft held immense power. Join us in honoring Joan's incredible story, reflecting upon the injustices faced by those who dared to be different. Let this candle serve as a symbol of resilience and a reminder to embrace our unique qualities.
